Automotive sector is one of the major sector in Indonesia with the total market value (sales revenue) estimated at about US$ 5 billion as of 2006
The Indonesian passenger car market is still fragmented and the production is inefficient. Majority of domestic manufacturers still serve as assemblers for foreign car manufacturer primarily Japanese automakers.
In Indonesian automotive sector, transportation and warehousing form the largest logistics functions accounting for more than 70.0 percent of the logistics cost. While the transportation function in an automotive company is largely outsourced, warehousing is controlled by the company through its own agents and distributors.
Among the other two important logistics functions, freight forwarding and information management, again the former is largely outsourced while the latter is controlled by the companies
In Indonesian automotive sector, outsourcing logistics to 3PL service providers was pioneered by multinational companies (MNCs), in mid-1990s, following their parent groups abroad. The market transformed into a steady growing market by early 21st century, due to increased adoption including domesticcompanies, thus providing immense opportunities for the 3PL providers.
