  The disease management industry is currently in a transition stage. Health plans, employers, and Medicare are taking a closer look at the effectiveness of disease management programs in reducing costs and improving health outcomes. Those presently working with disease management programs are requesting a broader range of services. This has prompted many disease management companies to look for ways to enhance their services and expand their patient population management capabilities. The emerging remote patient monitoring (RPM) may provide these companies with a solution.

  RPM service providers and disease management companies are philosophically aligned in their interest in reducing costs while improving patient outcomes. Furthermore, they each emphasize their potential for providing preventative health benefits, when discussing how they can add value to health services and assist in containing rising treatment costs. While disease management companies have developed their expertise in designing health maintenance and wellness programs for patients living with chronic illness, RPM service providers have developed technology that can efficiently monitor patients and significant expand health data collection for high risk patients.
